From the desk of Dave Ratner, owner of Dave's Soda and Pet City
How often does my bird’s nails need to be trimmed?
And do I have to have the wings clipped or can I let
my bird fly around?

Depending on the bird, and the species of the bird,
some need their nails to be trimmed every two months
while others seemingly never need to have their nails
cut. Finches and canaries usually need to have their
nails trimmed much more often than any of the parrot
species like parakeets and cockatiels. Bird’s nails
can also be kept to the right length with the use of
the new cement perches that should be placed high up
in your bird’s cage. These perches will not hurt the
skin part of the feet like the old sandpaper covers
could and can be cleaned and used for a very long
time.
It is your choice whether to have your bird’s wings
clipped or not. For birds like parakeets, cockatiels,
and the many species of parrots, clipping the flight
feathers makes taming the bird much easier, as they
will look for a way to get off the floor and your
finger or hand can help them. The flight feathers will
grow back in every six months or so and therefore need
to be clipped at least twice a year. Clipping the
wings does not hurt the bird at all, it is like
cutting hair, and not having to worry about your
beloved pet flying out a window or door can be very
comforting, as pet birds are rarely found again when
this happens.
