From the desk of Mark Whitney, Business Manager at Houser-Buick.
Hello, I'm Mark Whitney, Business Manager at Houser-Buick.
Recently I was asked what the difference was between an automatic transmission
and a manual transmission, and when did automatic transmissions come on the scene.
Well, basically, with an automatic transmission there is no clutch pedal, nor
is there a gear shift box. Once you put the car in drive, everything is automatic,
hence the name “automatic” transmission. The first automatic transmissions
appeared on the scene in 1938. General Motors developed the first line of cars
to sport automatic transmissions -- Oldsmobiles offered "Hydra-Matic drive."
Automatic transmission was a fairly common option on most American cars by 1948.
