How do I know what size I should take in a suit? Selecting an off the rack suit in the correct size is the first crucial step towards insuring a good fit. If you start with the correct size, then the tailor will need to perform fewer alterations in order to get the suit to fit well.
You need to select a suit that fits you in the shoulder and that is proportionally the right length for your torso. These are the two things that can not be changed, whereas, sleeve length and waist size can be more easily adjusted to the individual.
The first step is to determine if you are a regular, short, long or extra long. Generally, a man who is 5’8” to 6’0 tall is a regular, 5’4” to 5’8” a short, 6’0” to 6’3” a long and 6’3” to 6’10” an extra long.
Once you have determined your correct length then you need to determine your correct chest size within that proportion. This is normally done by taking a measurement of the mans chest when he is standing up straight and in a relaxed posture. The measurement is performed with a tape measure which should be loosely fitted around the individual’s chest. At this point, the chest measurement will give you the correct suit size – ie: 42, 44, 46, etc.
Simply try on the correct chest size within the correct garment length for confirmation. Pay attention to the shoulders which should fit comfortably but in a direct line with the man’s shoulder and to the length of the coat which should cover the torso but not extend to far below the man’s posterior.
